Day trips from Cancún are easy to plan, but the distances are uneven. Isla Mujeres is a 20-minute boat ride. Chichén Itzá is close to three hours each way. Bacalar is about four hours each way, which makes it a very long day. The right choice depends on how many hours you want to spend in a vehicle, who is traveling, and what time you are willing to leave.
The times below are typical door-to-door driving estimates in normal traffic and should be treated as guides. Ticket prices and ferry schedules change, so confirm them close to your date.
Chichén Itzá, Valladolid and Ik Kil
Chichén Itzá is about 195 kilometers from Cancún, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours each way. It opens at 8 a.m., with last entry at 4 p.m., and a foreign adult ticket has been quoted at about 650 MXN. El Castillo itself cannot be climbed and has not been since 2006. Tour buses from Cancún typically arrive between 10 and 11 a.m., so arriving at opening is the difference between a quiet site and a crowded one. Yucatán state runs one hour behind Cancún, which matters for tour timings.
The most comfortable way to do it is to see the ruins first, then swim at Cenote Ik Kil, about 3 kilometers away, and have lunch in Valladolid, about 40 minutes from the site. Valladolid is also about 1.5 to 2 hours from Cancún on the toll highway, and it has colonial streets, Cenote Zací in town and Cenote Suytun a short drive away. Use the official gate at Chichén Itzá and ignore unofficial guides near the entrance.
Isla Mujeres, Holbox and Cozumel
The islands are the easiest escape from the Cancún heat, but they are very different day trips.
Isla Mujeres is the simplest. The Ultramar ferry from Puerto Juárez takes about 20 minutes, runs roughly every 30 minutes from early morning until late evening, and costs around 300 MXN one way. It is the best choice for families and for a relaxed day on a private boat, which is the way many groups spend it. See our catamaran charters if you would rather have the water to yourselves.
- Holbox: Cancún to the Chiquilá pier is about 195 kilometers, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours, then a 25 to 35 minute ferry (around 170 to 220 MXN each way). There are no cars on the island; people use golf carts. A day trip works but leaves only about two hours on the island, so most people stay a night. Whale shark season runs June to September, and those tours leave early in the morning, so they do not fit a day trip.
- Cozumel: There is no direct ferry from Cancún. You drive about 45 to 60 minutes to Playa del Carmen, then take a 40 to 45 minute ferry, so budget 1.5 to 2.5 hours each way. It is best for snorkeling, diving and a beach club. Cruise ships crowd the waterfront from roughly 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., so plan town time for later. A day from Cancún is tiring; staying in Playa del Carmen makes it far easier.
Xcaret, Xel-Há and Xplor
Grupo Xcaret operates several parks along the coast between Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen and farther south. Pick one per day. Each is a full day on its own.
- Xcaret: Roughly 1 hour 20 minutes from Cancún. A culture and nature park with underground rivers, a beach, an aquarium and a large evening show. Plan eight to twelve hours.
- Xel-Há: About 1 hour 45 minutes, the farthest of the group. A natural inlet for snorkeling and floating, best for a full day in the water.
- Xplor: About 1 hour 20 minutes. Ziplines, vehicles and underground rivers. It runs a day version (about 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and a night version, Xplor Fuego (about 5:30 to 11 p.m.).
- Xenses and Xoximilco: Xenses is a half-day sensory park about 1 hour 15 minutes away. Xoximilco is an evening party on a trajinera boat, only about 25 minutes from Cancún.
Tulum, Cobá, Sian Ka'an and Bacalar
South of Cancún the trips get longer, but they are also the most scenic and varied.
- Tulum and Cobá: Tulum is about 130 kilometers and 1.5 to 2 hours from Cancún. Cobá is about 45 minutes inland from Tulum and about 2 hours from Cancún. It opens at 8 a.m., with a foreign ticket around 210 MXN. Nohoch Mul, the tallest pyramid in the region, has reportedly reopened to climbing after a long closure, with a new wooden staircase, though access can be paused, so check before you go. Rent a bike inside the site. Several small cenotes nearby make a good swim afterward.
- Sian Ka'an: A UNESCO biosphere reserve of mangroves, lagoons and reef. The accessible half-day option is Muyil, about 23 kilometers south of Tulum, with ruins that close at 3 p.m. and a lagoon boat ride that costs about 1,000 MXN per boat for independent visitors. Punta Allen, the other entrance, is a long unpaved road and not a day-trip choice from Cancún.
- Bacalar: The Lagoon of Seven Colors is about 330 kilometers from Cancún, around four hours each way. It is possible in one day with a very early start, but you spend most of it in the vehicle. The better approach is to stay at least one night. A boat tour usually visits Cenote Negro, Cenote Esmeralda, the Pirates' Channel and Bird Island, and November to May is the more comfortable season.
Day trips from Cancún: private tour or group tour
Group tours are cheaper per person and perfectly workable for solo travelers. The trade-off is fixed pick-up times, a large bus, shared stops and a pace set by the slowest group member. On the long trips, that means a departure around 6 or 7 a.m. and a return after dark.
For families and groups of friends, private transport usually makes more sense. You leave when you want, stop when a child needs a break, skip a stop if the weather turns, and reach Chichén Itzá or Cobá at opening, before the buses. You also have an air-conditioned vehicle with space for swim bags and a cooler. For anything over three hours each way, we strongly recommend a private driver, or an overnight stay instead of a day trip.
Best time to leave
As a rule, leave early. For Chichén Itzá, depart Cancún around 5:30 to 6 a.m. to arrive at opening. For Cobá, leave by 6 a.m. For Xcaret parks, leave about 90 minutes before opening, and for Isla Mujeres, take a mid-morning ferry to avoid the first crowd but still have a full afternoon. Holbox, Cozumel and Bacalar all benefit from an overnight stay.
