Cancún vs Playa del Carmen is the first decision most people make for a Riviera Maya trip. Both have Caribbean beaches and good food. The difference is how you want to spend the days between the beach and dinner.
Short version: Cancún is better for big resorts, nightlife and quick access to the airport and Isla Mujeres. Playa del Carmen is better if you want to walk to restaurants and sit closer to Tulum, cenotes and Cozumel. Many of my clients split the trip and do both.
Getting there
Cancún airport (CUN) is the gateway for both. The Hotel Zone is roughly 20 to 30 minutes away. Playa del Carmen is about 70 km south, usually under an hour by private car. If Tulum is part of the plan, Tulum airport (TQO) opened in December 2023 and is another option for the southern end.
Beaches and the sea
Cancún's Hotel Zone has long, wide beaches. The side facing Isla Mujeres is calmer, while the open stretch further south has bigger waves and stronger currents on windy days. Playa del Carmen's beaches are narrower and busier near the center, with calmer water in places and beach clubs along the sand.
Sargassum can affect both, and it changes beach by beach. I check conditions before every beach day.
Walking, dining and nightlife
In Playa del Carmen you can walk to dinner. Quinta Avenida is a long pedestrian street lined with restaurants, bars and shops, and the side streets have quieter places. In Cancún most stays are spread along the Hotel Zone, so you usually ride to dinner.
For nightlife, Cancún wins. The Party Center around Km 9 has the big clubs, and supper clubs like Taboo are close by. Playa has a lively bar scene, but on a smaller scale.
Villas and where to stay
Cancún has the big all-inclusive resorts, modern condos in Puerto Cancún and quieter resorts in Costa Mujeres to the north. Playa del Carmen has more villas and condos within walking distance of the center, plus gated Playacar, which is quiet and close to the beach.
Day trips from each
From Cancún, Isla Mujeres is the easy win: the ferry from Puerto Juárez takes about 15 to 20 minutes, or go by private yacht. From Playa del Carmen, Cozumel is about 30 minutes by ferry, and Tulum, Puerto Aventuras and many cenotes are closer.
- Pick Cancún if: You want big resorts, nightlife, yacht days and the shortest airport ride.
- Pick Playa del Carmen if: You want to walk to dinner, stay in a villa near the center and be closer to Tulum and Cozumel.
- Do both if: You have a week or more. A few nights in each is easy with a private transfer between them.
