Sorting Cancún resorts by area matters, because a resort name says less about where you are than people expect. Breathless Cancún Soul, Hyatt Ziva and the Riu hotels are on the Hotel Zone strip. Iberostar and AVA are further south on the same road. Planet Hollywood is in Costa Mujeres, to the north. Moon Palace, Royalton Riviera, Haven Riviera and Breathless Riviera Cancún are south of the airport, toward Puerto Morelos.
Your airport ride, nearest ferry and best dinner outside the gates depend on which of those areas you are in. I am not affiliated with any resort named here; I use the names only so you can find your area. Distances come from published hotel listings, and drive times are estimates that change with traffic, so confirm the timing when you book.
Cancún resorts by area, north Hotel Zone: Breathless Cancún Soul, Hyatt Ziva, Riu
This is the part of the Hotel Zone closest to downtown. Breathless Cancún Soul is listed at Km 4.5 of Boulevard Kukulcán, about 25 km from the airport, and transfer providers quote 25 to 35 minutes. The Riu hotels on this stretch are in the same range, and Hyatt Ziva sits at the north end of the strip. Expect longer at 7 to 9 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m.
Downtown Cancún is close, and the Isla Mujeres ferry from Puerto Juárez crosses in about 20 minutes. Hotel Zone piers at Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol take around 35. Private yacht and catamaran days from here usually board at a Hotel Zone marina or head for Isla Mujeres. The dock depends on the boat, so we confirm it when you book.
Tip: tell your driver the exact hotel entrance. Several large resorts share the same stretch of road.
- Breathless Cancún Soul, Km 4.5: roughly 25 to 35 minutes from CUN
- Hyatt Ziva Cancún: north end of the Hotel Zone, around 30 minutes in a published review
- Riu Palace Las Americas, Km 8.5: other Riu hotels nearby, similar ride
- Isla Mujeres: Puerto Juárez ferry about 20 minutes, Hotel Zone piers about 35
- Downtown Cancún: dinner around Parque de las Palapas, local prices
Mid and south Hotel Zone: Iberostar Cancún and AVA Resort
Further down Boulevard Kukulcán the airport gets closer. Iberostar Cancún is listed at Km 17, between Playa Delfines and Playa Ballena, about 15 minutes from the airport. AVA Resort Cancún is listed at Km 25 to 26, roughly 10 km from CUN, and a transfer provider quotes 20 to 25 minutes.
You are far from downtown and the north ferries, so the useful direction for a day out is south. El Rey archaeological zone and Playa Delfines are on the Hotel Zone road, and Puerto Morelos, with its reef national park and quiet town square, is a short drive from the airport side. Boats from this end usually leave from a Hotel Zone marina or from Puerto Morelos.
Tip: Cancún airport has four terminals and your airline decides which one you use. Send your flight details so the driver waits in the right place.
- Iberostar Cancún, Km 17: about 15 minutes from CUN per its listing
- AVA Resort Cancún, Km 25 to 26: about 20 to 25 minutes
- El Rey ruins and Playa Delfines: easy half days on the same road
Costa Mujeres: Planet Hollywood Cancún
Planet Hollywood Cancún is in Costa Mujeres, north of Puerto Juárez and Punta Sam, about 35 km from the airport. That is the longest ride in this guide. I would plan roughly 45 to 55 minutes in normal traffic, though I could not verify an official time. There is no resort strip here, so stepping out without a ride is not really an option.
Isla Mujeres is the obvious day: Puerto Juárez is on the way back toward Cancún and the crossing is about 20 minutes. Private boat days from the north go to Isla Mujeres and the coast around it. For dinner, the shortest drive into real Cancún is the Puerto Juárez and downtown side, not the Hotel Zone.
Tip: arrange your return ride before you leave the resort. Taxis are scarce this far north.
- Planet Hollywood Cancún: Costa Mujeres, about 35 km from CUN
- Puerto Juárez ferry terminal: Isla Mujeres in about 20 minutes
Riviera Cancún and Puerto Morelos: Moon Palace, Royalton, Haven, Breathless Riviera
These resorts are not in Cancún proper. They are south of the airport on Highway 307 and the Cancún to Puerto Morelos road, so the ride is shorter than to the north Hotel Zone. I would plan 15 to 30 minutes for all of them, depending on traffic.
Puerto Morelos is the natural day trip: a national park reef, a small town and better food than a resort buffet. From here the rest of the Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen to Tulum, is reachable by private car. Tulum is a long day, so plan an early start. Boat days from this corridor usually leave from Puerto Morelos or head north to Isla Mujeres.
Tip: these resorts are huge and the gates are far from the lobby. Give your driver your wing or entrance and allow extra minutes.
- The Grand at Moon Palace, Km 36.5 Cancún–Chetumal road: about 15 minutes from CUN per one listing
- Royalton Riviera Cancún, Km 332: Puerto Morelos, 15.7 km from CUN
- Haven Riviera Cancún: Puerto Morelos, 13.2 km from CUN, beside the reef park
- Breathless Riviera Cancún, Km 27.5: 19.6 km from CUN
Leaving the all-inclusive for a day: is it worth it?
For most people, yes, once and done properly. An all-inclusive handles food and drink well, but it is a closed loop. A day out gives you the sea somewhere different, a town not built for visitors, and a meal priced like a Mexican meal. Do not try three things in a day. Pick one: a boat to Isla Mujeres, a reef snorkel at Puerto Morelos, or a cenote and town lunch.
Some limits. If you came for the beach and spa, you do not need to leave every day. With small children, keep it short. If you already booked a special dinner at the resort, plan around it. I build the day around your pickup time and group size. I do not publish prices here because they depend on the boat, the group and the date, so message me for a quote.
- Half day: Isla Mujeres by ferry or private boat
- Half day: Puerto Morelos reef and town lunch
- Full day: private yacht or catamaran with lunch aboard
Licensed private transport, not airport taxis
After customs, the first people you meet at Cancún airport are sellers, not drivers. Timeshare reps offer free tours that become hours of sales talk, and some claim your transfer was cancelled so they can sell you another. Say no gracias and keep walking. Uber cannot pick up at the terminal, and published guides describe airport taxis as unregulated, with unpredictable pricing.
Book a private transfer before you land. Your driver waits outside the terminal and takes you to your resort. A licensed operator gives you a driver's name, a registered vehicle and a price confirmed in writing. If anyone asks, say Reservé mi transporte. One booking can cover your arrival, a day out and the ride back, with the same WhatsApp contact throughout.
- Confirm flight number, terminal and passenger count
- Ask for the driver's name and vehicle in advance
- Agree the price in writing
