Akumal and Puerto Aventuras sit between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, and they work well for a bachelorette group that wants a quiet villa base, a private boat day and easy nights out in Tulum. Akumal is about 30 minutes from both Playa del Carmen and Tulum, and Puerto Aventuras, which has the marina, is about 22 km north of Akumal.
This guide covers where to stay, how the yacht cruise works, what to know about the turtles in Akumal Bay and how a 3-day plan fits together. Viviana arranges the villa, the boat, the transfers and the dinners, so the group only has to pick the dates.
Why plan a bachelorette in Akumal or Puerto Aventuras?
Tulum is the name most groups search first, but the boats for a Tulum bachelorette cruise leave from Puerto Aventuras because Tulum has no marina. Staying in Akumal or Puerto Aventuras puts the group close to the boat, the beach and the cenotes, with Tulum's beach clubs and nightlife a short drive away.
The pace is calmer than Tulum or Playa del Carmen. Days can start slowly at the villa, and the group can decide night by night whether to go out or stay in with a private chef.
Where to stay: a villa in Akumal or Puerto Aventuras
For a bachelorette group, a private villa usually works better than hotel rooms. Everyone shares one pool, one kitchen and one place to get ready, and decorations, a cake or a dinner can be set up without asking a front desk.
Akumal has beachfront houses and villas along a quiet stretch of coast. Puerto Aventuras is a gated community built around its marina, with villas and condos close to where the boats leave. Viviana matches the house to the group size and budget and checks bedroom and bathroom counts so nobody shares a bed by surprise. Tell her early if the bride wants her own room or if anyone needs a ground-floor bedroom.
The bachelorette cruise from Puerto Aventuras
The boat day is usually the highlight. A private yacht for the group leaves from the Puerto Aventuras marina with captain and crew, music, drinks and food on board, and swimming stops along the way. Private yachts for Tulum and Akumal groups start from $1,500 USD for 4 hours; the final price depends on the boat, the hours and the food and drinks.
From Akumal the drive to the marina takes about 23 minutes, and from Tulum about 37 minutes. Viviana arranges a private van there and back so nobody has to drive after the toast.
- Book the boat early for weekends and high season
- Ask for decorations to be set up before you board
- Plan the boat for the morning or midday and keep the evening free for dinner
Turtles in Akumal Bay: the rules
Akumal means place of turtles in Maya, and swimming with sea turtles in the bay is a popular morning for groups. The bay is a protected refuge area, and Conanp rules apply: groups of up to 6 people with one authorized guide, a life vest, snorkel, mask and short fins, and activities between 9:00 and 17:00.
Do not touch, feed or chase the turtles, use biodegradable sunscreen and stay off the seagrass and coral. Only operators with a permit can run the swim, so book it through a licensed guide rather than on the beach.
Nights out: Tulum is close
For a big night, most groups go to Tulum. Beach clubs and dinner spots along the Tulum hotel zone are an easy drive from Akumal, and a private van means the group arrives together and gets home safely. Viviana handles the reservations and the driver so the night does not end with ten people looking for taxis.
For a quieter night, a private chef dinner at the villa is the other favorite. Private chefs start from $120 USD a person, with the menu set in advance.
